Tschönyi Bardo

9 channel video sound installation 2017

State of experiencing reality

The video-sound installation is inspired by “Tschönyi Bardo”, the “state of experiencing reality”.

Water is the element that this bardo represents artistically.

It is the element that changes the most, just as it can be viewed as a large transformer. Water covers much of the planet and makes up the human body. Water is an element of birth and the elixir of life, it is at the beginning of creation, but also represents the border to the realms of the dead (Styx).

In an intermediate state of “being carried away” the mind is confronted in the bardo with images and impressions that it has created itself.

These impressions can be peaceful and heavenly, or angry and chaotic.

The rushing water of the spring raging through a narrow mountain gorge, apparently chaotic and violent, opens up a quiet and timeless dimension when viewed, which can be read both forwards and backwards (past, future) if you allow yourself to be drawn into this movement .

The chaos can come to rest in the almost gentle dynamics of the sea waves, and  Light shines on.

The task of Tschönyi Bardo is to let yourself be carried away - but without losing yourself, and at the end of a tumultuous dynamic to recognize the “clear primal light”: “You will now see the appearance of the primal light. Recognize this as such! I ask you, take this exercise on yourself. "(Tibetan Book of the Dead)

Returning to the water is a return to the source.

The video-sound installation wants to give a feeling for the powerful forces that determine us.

Presented on nine large screens, it creates an experience space that shows:

These powerful forces are not outside of us - nor are their dynamics  and grandeur.

The "white noise" of the withdrawn sound opens access to archaic images of inner realities (Tschönyi Bardo).
