The Algarve is the southernmost region of Portugal.
Its name is derived from the Arabic "al-gharb", which means "the West" in German.
Like any other vacation destination
the Algarve also benefits from tourism and suffers from it at the same time.
What remains when the tourist crowds are gone again?
The large number of guests - 4.2 million in the summer of 2018,
bring the drinking water supply almost to a standstill every summer.
Large building projects are destroying the traditional ways of life and social structures in the coastal region.
Because of the drought, the water reservoirs in the Eastern Algarve are only 30 to 40 percent full.
For the area of Barlavento (West Algarve) and Arade, the Portuguese environmental agency APA gives the fill level at around 50 percent each.
According to the meteorological institute IPMA, the entire south of Portugal can be assigned to regions with severe to extreme drought.
